Shrinking North American bird population is getting worse faster. Experts blame agriculture, warming

Billions fewer birds are flying through North American skies than decades ago and their population is shrinking ever faster, mostly due to a combination of intensive agriculture and warming temperatures, a new study found. Nearly half of the 261 species studied showed big enough losses in numbers to be statistically significant.

 

Proposal to accelerate large rural development clears Florida House Committee, raises land-use questions

A proposal to speed up approvals of developments proposed for large tracts of natural or agricultural land cleared its third and final committee stop in the Florida House of Representatives Thursday. The bill would still need to clear one more Senate committee before it could advance to become law.

 

Iowa lawmakers ask if Iowa agriculture and natural resource departments should merge

A bill advanced from an Iowa House subcommittee Thursday that would require a study on combining the state Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Environmental groups have opposed House File 2042.

 

$10 million awarded to restore Tennessee grasslands

Austin Peay State University (APSU) secured a record $10 million grant to restore grasslands across Middle Tennessee over the next 5 years. APSU will focus on restoring 2,500 acres across seven sites. The money to restore these grasslands comes from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and America’s Ecosystem Restoration Initiative.
