New species are being found faster than ever before, study shows

Scientists are now identifying more than 16,000 new species each year, revealing far more biodiversity than expected across animals, plants, fungi, and beyond. Many species remain undiscovered, especially insects and microbes, and future advances could unlock millions more.

Western Pennsylvania Conservancy adds 74 acres to natural area within the French Creek Watershed

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy announced today the permanent protection of 74 forested acres in Venango Township, Erie County. The land has added to the Conservancy’s now 1,138-acre West Branch French Creek Conservation Area.

 

Statewide survey aims to put California’s fungi on the conservation map

A state-funded survey has collected fungi species from across California, uncovering hundreds of species previously unknown to science. Part of a statewide biodiversity effort, the project has gathered thousands of specimens and marks the first initiative of its kind in North America. Understanding fungi’s role in nature has implications for conservation and forest restoration.
