The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Army announced a proposal to further define, and scale back, the number of waterways and wetlands protected by the federal government under the Clean Water Act, a bedrock environmental law.

Northern bog turtles have federal protection, but their southern counterparts don’t. To begin to save the threatened species, someone had to rebuild their home. In 2023, Parr and his colleagues at the Nature Conservancy began creating a fen—a type of wetland that is closely related to a bog.
