New research shows grasses can fortify forests against buckthorn invasion

New University of Minnesota research suggests that seeding native plants alongside invasive removal efforts may turn the tide in the battle against buckthorn. Most attempts offer a temporary reprieve as buckthorn quickly re-establishes dominance.

Monarch butterflies will get federal protections as a threatened species

U.S. wildlife officials announced a decision to extend federal protections to monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) after years of warnings from environmentalists that populations are shrinking and the beloved pollinator may not survive climate change. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to add the butterfly to the threatened species list by the end of 2025 following an extensive public comment period.
