With ready orders and an energy czar, Trump plots pivot to fossil fuels*

As President-elect Trump’s transition team plans his energy and environment agenda, it is relying on two seasoned former cabinet leaders and fossil fuel lobbyists to dramatically reshape the agencies charged with protecting the nation’s air, water, climate and public lands, according to six people familiar with the matter.

 

House, Senate approve slate of natural resources bills

Lawmakers passed a number of bipartisan natural resources bills, including one to reauthorize major conservation programs.

The House voted 366-21 in favor of S. 3791, the “America’s Conservation Enhancement Reauthorization Act.” The bill, from Senate Environment and Public Works leadership, already cleared that chamber earlier this year.

Protection of wetlands could come down to farmers, according to a new report

A new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, or UCS, called “Wetlands in Peril,” argues that farmers can play a key role in protecting and restoring wetlands in the Upper Midwest, even as federal policy has paved the way for industrial agriculture to degrade and destroy wetlands in recent decades.

Rare wildflower found only in New Mexico granted federally protected status

A rare wildflower, which now only grows in New Mexico, has been granted federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. The swale paintbrush (Castilleja ornata) grows in a unique ecosystem in the southwest corner of the state, an annual plant that grows at elevation in grasslands that receive seasonal moisture.
