Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest are burning faster than they can regrow*

The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada, they have evolved to burn once every century. However, one patch of forest burned for the second time in a decade. More frequent, bigger wildfires, fueled by climate change, are a formidable challenge to the black spruce, a species that has dominated these landscapes for thousands of years.

60-Acre ‘Union Grove’ acquisition marks first protection of state endangered Tennessee Trillium (Trillium tennesseense)

TennGreen Land Conservancy and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation collaborated to acquire a 60-acre swath of land home to the first protected population of the state endangered Tennessee Trillium (Trillium tennesseense). Until this collaboration, the species existed only in private, unprotected areas.

Texas preserve designated as nation's newest national natural landmark

Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has affirmed the designation of Independence Creek Preserve in west Texas as the nation’s newest National Natural Landmark, recognizing an important piece of America’s natural heritage. This nearly 20,000-acre Chihuahuan Desert preserve features spectacular vistas of flattop mesas, dramatic canyons, woodlands, and prairie grasses.

 

Environmental Protection Agency releases draft strategy to better protect endangered species from insecticides

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its draft Insecticide Strategy for public comment, touting it as a milestone in their efforts to adopt early and practical protections for federally endangered and threatened species. The draft strategy identifies protections that EPA will consider when it registers a new insecticide or reevaluates an existing one.
